Member Profile: Miles L Hamrick Sr, MAI, AI-GRS

Where do you live and who do you work for?
I am from and have lived in Gastonia, NC (Gaston County) all of my life. Currently (LOL) I work for Miles Hamrick Appraisal Services, Inc. My firm provides appraisals for commercial and residential properties, and data consulting services for private and public institutions on a wide range of property types.

How long have you been appraising?
I have been in the real estate and appraisal profession since 1986 ~ (38 years~).

Who was your supervisor as a Trainee and how did you meet them?
I began my carrier appraising prior to official licensing under the supervision of Elmer N. Crawford, Bessemer City, NC. He was a good friend of my father and offered me a position during the great interest rate drop refinancing in the late 1980s.

What is the most unique property you’ve appraised?
Great question, considering that I have built my business on appraising the Unique and Unusual. Ranging from an equitable distribution case in which the Single-Family Home and Detached Commercial Auto Garage were used to raise “Five Toed Cats” (and yes there was an issue with the sheer volume of cats and their waste), foreclosed gas station with no sewer available because the prior owner had a “donation” agreement for a drain field with the religious meeting facility next door, to a strip shopping center with too many “restaurant tenants” for the parking capacity.

What is a fact about you, outside of work-life, that people would be surprised to know?
Well, let’s just say that being part of the appraisal profession has allowed me to do anything I wanted to do in my life. Choosing one thing is difficult; however, the fact that I used to race ET and Super Gas Harley-Davidsons usually surprises some people I meet.
